Hamptons.com profiled adventure racers Mary Scheerer and Shari Hymes, who will be racing with Team Towanda next month in Montana. An excerpt from the article can be found below:
Mary Scheerer and Shari Hymes are right at home in the wilderness, sans cell phone and beach blanket. Beyond the walls of their Sag Harbor home, they’re literally surrounded with wooded terrain which, by hike or bike, they’ve come to know like the back of their hands.
It was nine years ago when the two women took their hobby to the next level, maxed out on the intensity of their new sport delving into the curious world of adventure racing. Since their initial quest, they’ve competed everywhere from up and down the East Coast to Australia’s Down Under, pushing their bodies and minds to the limit with challenges that are as mentally trying as they are physically exhausting.
A Danish Trekker taking part in the TGO Challenge, an annual walking event in the Scottish Highlands, took ill last week and activated his SPOT Messenger alerting rescue teams to his condition, and quite possibly saving his life.
Niels VIntner activated his device at 3 AM local time after suffering from what is described as acute stomach pains. Once activated, the SPOT Messenger sent an alert to the monitoring station in Houston, Texas. From there, the location of the beacon was passed on to Scottish police in Fort William, who dispatched an RAF helicopter to VIntner’s precise location to extract him.
This event marks the first time that a SPOT Messenger has been activated in the U.K. The device is designed and manufactured by Primal Quest presenting sponsor SPOT who will use the Messengers to provide up to the minute tracking of teams while out on the course during the race.
Today we turn the spotlight onto the Dirty Avocados, who will be racing in Montana in just a few short weeks. This very entertaining interview was conducted by Gordon Wright.
Team Dirty Avocados is a Northern California adventure racing phenomenon, part semi-elite racing squad and part slapstick revue. In a world where too many adventure racers take themselves – and the sport – too seriously, the Dirty As keep it real. They are a team in a very real sense – comprising of a revolving cast of at least 11 members who train hard and race harder. With such a large squad, there is a bit of good-natured competition among the members, but over the past three years, they have notched impressive podium finishes in races ranging from Raid the North Extreme and Baja Travesia to the Tahoe Big Blue and the Gold Rush 24 Hour Adventure Race.
The Dirty Avocados have, for the first time, two teams entered in this summer’s Primal Quest, and I was able to catch up with three key team members at a pub recently. Unfortunately, what started out as an interview turned into something out of a Hunter S. Thompson manuscript, replete with large quantities of beer, displays of manly love, and complaints about Primal Quest’s onerous certification program.
The team was founded, with fairly disastrous results, in 2005, in my driveway. But that’s for later on in the story. First, meet some Dirty Avocados:

Famed mountaineer Conrad Anker, who is part of the PQ climbing team, has joined forces with The Conservation Alliance and Timex Expedition to launch the Return To The Outdoors initiative which is designed to inspire people to pursue outdoor adventures and reconnect with nature.
The Return To The Outdoors website encourages us all to share our stories of what draws us to go outside and explore the world around us.
