The Calgary Herald wrote a very nice profile of Dr. Tim Watson and his wife Doone who make up half of Team Brain Attack. The couple has been dreaming of competing in Primal Quest for the past five years, and in just a few weeks, they’ll see their dream realized.
From the article:
There is little Dr. Tim Watson won’t do to let people know about one of North America’s biggest killers.
On Wednesday, Tim, a stroke neurologist from Calgary, and his wife Doone Watson rappelled down the four-storey building of the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Kensington to raise awareness of stroke.
The couple made it safely to the sidewalk, but the stunt is just a taste of the 50-something couple’s adventures to come later this month.

The Billings Gazette published a really nice article today about Team Big Sky/Flathead Beacon which has three members who call Montana home. Husband and wife team Darin and Kristin Fredericks will join forces with ultrarunner Andrew Matulionis, and Thomas Etter of Missouri, to compete in Primal Quest. The team is hoping that having a strong core from Montana will serve them well when the race gets underway on the June 23rd.
An excerpt from the article follows…
Kristen and Darin Fredericks have a racy relationship.
The couple met as teammates during a 1995 endurance race. They got along so well that they teamed up for life by getting married and raising three children. Each runs a business in the Bigfork area.
Somehow in their busy schedules, they’ve still found time to train for the upcoming
500-mile Primal Quest Montana 2008 race, billed as “the world’s most challenging human endurance competition.” The race starts at Big Sky Resort on June 23. The course route is kept secret until the day before the race, when maps are handed out.
Explorer Todd Carmichael will set out in November to make a solo speed trek, unsupported, to the South Pole. He hopes to become the first American to make that trek, and he hopes to do it in just 38 days. This excellent video, which I came across over at the Best Hike Blog (welcome back Rick!), pretty much says it all.
You’ve got to love how Todd introduces himself in the video. “I’m Todd Carmichael, and I explorer.” That ranks right up there with: “My name is Bond. James Bond.” in my book. You can learn more about Todd’s Trek here, and you can bet I’ll be following his adventures in November. For now, have a look at his video.
The Wend Blog posted this excellent ten minute long video of the first ski descent of Dhaulagiri. The video opens with some cool shots of life in Nepal, with a mix of great scenery and some video of the wonderful people that live there, but soon it shifts gears to the mountain and the action there.
Dhaula is the 7th tallest mountain in the world, and is located in the north central region of Nepal. It stands 8167m in height (26,795 feet). The video shows the challenges of the climb, along with plenty of snow. But reaching the top is just the beginning, as the descent by skis is quite a site as well.
GoPro and Primal Quest present the “Be a HERO…GoPro” Primal Quest Adventure Race Video Contest. GoPro will award the winning team $1000 cash and four complete GoPro camera bundles with accessories as a reward for most viewed video. Videos will be 2 minutes or less and posted on YouTube.com and Active.com.
GoPro’s wearable sports cameras will be distributed on loan to teams during the registration process. Memory cards (sponsored by Kingston) and batteries (sponsored by Energizer) will be swapped out at predetermined TA’s.
Teams are encouraged to participate in this opportunity to compile footage during the event to promote the excitement that is adventure racing. Filming with GoPro’s wearable sports cameras during the race will enable athletes to share their personal Primal Quest experiences with friends and family.
GoPro’s cameras and resulting videos also represent an excellent tool for use in obtaining team sponsors and generating non-participant interest in adventure racing.
Contest Details:
Footage from each team will be edited and uploaded to YouTube.com and Active.com by volunteers after the event. The winning video will be determined by the highest number of viewings on YouTube.com during the specified time period ending 9/1/08.

Dawn, I wish you and Don could have been sitting in our living room with Melissa, Eric and I watching the PQ movie for the first time. We were laughing and crying re-living our experience while watching the race. I am truly at a loss for words (and not because of sleep deprivation) as how to thank all of you for this once in a life time experience.
