Quest for PQ: The Dream of Major Bull Project #10

It has always amazed me at how quickly my body can get used to being lazy. It has been officially a month since the injury to my right ankle, albeit only two weeks since I saw the doctor. Now in my PQ obsessed mind, when he said to give it a month of rest, I surmised that he meant since the injury, not from when I saw him. At least that is how I am justifying the level of soreness I have impressed upon myself in the last week.
I can just hear some of you now, “Now Todd, as a medical person, you should know better than to push yourself so hard so fast.” I hear you loud and clear because it is the same thing I have been telling myself all week. I was once a hardcore gym rat for many years and so I am pretty in tune with the level of punishment my body is willing to withstand. I have suffered injuries and have worked through them. The only problem now is that I am having to train much differently than the days when size was everything.
In consultation with many of my kind friends and helpful readers, I am learning to approach my level of training much differently. I am focusing much more on lighter weigths and more repititions to improve my muscle endurance of my fast twitch muscle fibres. This means I should have more in the tank when the time comes to dig deep for the long haul. I know I will never be a sinewy minimorph, but it does feel really good to be sore again in all of the right places. As for cardio, until I can get back to running or some other form of higher impact cardio, I am relagated to the stationary bicycle for hours at a time.
As you have hopefully noticed from my SPOT, I am once again on the road for work. I call these times my “Russian Training Kamp” which I will have the pleasure of enjoying for the next three weeks. One of the good things about being sequestered away from civilisation is that I don’t really have any excuses left to NOT train because it is basically the only form of entertainment I have. Well, that and maybe watching a little bit of professional foosball (table soccer) on an Italian sports network. Yes, they actually have a professional foosball league and it is televised. I wonder sometimes if I have missed my true calling as an on-air commentator for professional foosball. I know the hours would be better and the working conditions better, but seriously, could it really be as much fun as adventure racing? I guess I will soon find out.
Until next time…..TODD
P.S. No blog on Wednesdays while I am at “Kamp” due to lack of internet connection. Sorry, I promise to make it up to you.
