A Birthday On the Road with Jari Kirkland

A birthday has come and gone again. I really like birthdays so I spend them how I want. And this time around I went on a training vacation. It is a great place called Moab not very far from here and I took my lovely Scott bike, Salomon running shoes, Goode skis and Scarpa boots.
It started off great. A short ride in Fruita. A great trail: Lyons mixed in with Troy Built. When we got to Moab it had just snowed and lets just say NOT WARM!!!! So we camped out and decided to sleep in the next day till the sun hit our camp site. Like I said it was my birthday week. So we got some work done at the local coffee shop and busted out Slick Rock trail.
The next day, my birthday, we backcountry skied the La Sals. Mt Tuk was a great peak around 13,000 ft and 4 hours round trip. Perfect conditions and the turns, well lets just say they were the best present a girl could get.
So then it was off to the Canyonlands, south of Moab, called the Needles. It was warmer that day and we ran for 1 hour 45 minutes. It was great. A bit windy but great to be outside without layer upon layers of clothes.
Finally we road Porcupine Rim from town, a 30 mile ride. I enjoyed it, mostly. I find it hard to enjoy a ride when I have to get off and walk technically sections. I want to ride my bike. Better luck next time, right!!!
So that brings me back to Fruita and a run that was supposed to be easy, I kept wanting to just bust it out. It is important to have easy days but it can be hard for me. Luckily I had someone who reminded me a few times to reel it back in. So a run that can take me a little over an hour took me 1 hour 12 minutes. This is good training.
Then it was raining so I got a day off from training. Not that it needs to be raining to call off training but if I needed a day off and it seemed like a good idea. So now I am here writing it all down again for you. Hoping that you can train better for Primal Quest. Some weeks, it needs to be more about fun than training but it still needs to be training and hard and done well.
Have a great week!!!
Till next time. At that point I will have a few Xterra’s under my belt and will be gearing up for bigger and better things…
Jari
