Montana Shows It’s Support For Primal Quest

Sunday, Jul. 27th 2008 8:15 PM

The Primal Quest team received a very nice letter of support from the state of Montana following the race and we would like to share those kind words. The letter was written by Donnie Sexton, who was very instrumental in getting PQ to the Big Sky State.

July 24, 2008

Don Mann,

Primal Quest Director

 Dear Don:

On behalf of the State of Montana, we are very pleased that Primal Quest selected Montana as their race destination for 2008.  I have to admit that when we first started talking about this event in summer of 2007, I had no concept of how popular this endurance race would be and how much publicity it would garner for our state.  It has certainly turned out to be a win-win for all of us.

Partner Spotlight: SportRaxx

Tuesday, Jul. 1st 2008 2:36 PM

Throughout the race we want to take an opportunity to thank our partners, without whom there wouldn’t be a Primal Quest. Each of them plays a vital role in the success of the race and deserve credit for allowing us the opportunity to have this great adventure.

Today’s Partner Spotlight falls on SportRaxx, a manufacturer of modular rack systems exclusively designed for pick-up trucks that will meet all of your gear carrying needs in one simple product. Designed by Jerry Simpson, and built by hand in the U.S.A., the SportRaxx product line allows you to carry your bikes, kayaks, snowboards, or any other gear all at the same time. While most rack systems force you to choose which items you want to take with you, the SportRaxx system allows you to take it all.

The hallmark of SportRaxx is customer service at every stage of the buying process. Whether it’s helping you select the best rack for your needs, guiding you through the ordering process, or advising on the use of your SportRaxx, the company stands behind it’s product every step of the way. The companies focus on the customer, and meeting their needs, before and after the sale, has set them apart from other manufacturers who are more interested in selling to the Walmart crowd rather than cater to the true outdoor enthusiasts.

I would be remiss if I didn’t note that Jerry and Sherry Simpson, the owner of SportRaxx, are part of the Primal Quest family, having worked at a number of adventure races since being introduced to the sport back in 2003. But that also means they know what adventure racers needs, and how to taylor their products to meet those needs. They even have an entire rack system designed specifically for adventure racers and their support crews.

Primal Quest is proud to be call SportRaxx one of our segment sponsors, but even more than that, we’re proud to call Jerry and Sherry our friends. Their contributions to the race go above and beyond what can be conveyed in the term “partner” and their efforts are appreciated on every level.

Thank you Jerry, Sherry, and SportRaxx!

SPOT Messenger Keeps Racers Safe

Monday, Jun. 30th 2008 4:02 PM

Photo by Andres VargasBy now, everyone following Primal Quest from home is well aware of the capabilities of the SPOT Satellite Messenger. Throughout the course of the race, it’s allowed us all to track the teams progress, and check their standing on the leaderboard. But the device does a lot more than that. Whether you’re an adventure racer on a 10 day expedition race or an outdoor enthusiast heading out for a day in your local wilderness, the SPOT can provide security and safety with not only it’s ability to be tracked, but also to send messages, including a call for help.

Over the course of the past week, the SPOT Messenger has continued to impress everyone on the PQ staff, but none more than the Medical and Search and Rescue teams. Last week, when the Gallatin went from challenging white water to wild, white knuckle ride, the decision was made to pull everyone off the water, and the SAR team was able to quickly locate every team and keep track of their status, thanks to the SPOT. The fact that the Messenger is water proof, and floats, also proved invaluable in the conditions the teams were encountering. Within minutes, the teams were safe and sound on dry land, thanks to a coordinated effort between the Comms center and PQ staff and volunteers in the field. The SPOT Messenger was invaluable in those efforts.

Twice this week teams have inadvertently activated their SPOT Messengers, setting off a flurry of activity that begins with a signal being sent to SPOT’s monitoring center in Houston, TX, which immediately alerts the PQ Search and Rescue Team. From there, the SAR Team gets in contract with local authorities and coordinates with staff in the field to get on site just as quickly as they can. Fortunately, in these two cases, there was no emergency, but knowing the exact location of the teams in the field had allowed rescue teams to respond very quickly and with pin point accuracy.

Yesterday, one racer took a spill, going over the handle bars of his mountain bike at high speeds. He was reportedly unconscious for as much as 45 seconds, and the team activated it’s SPOT device to call for aid. Coordinating with the Comms staff, the medic in the field, who was also carrying a SPOT Messenger, was on location in a very short time. Primal Quest HQ was able to track the medic, and direct him to the team who had issued the 911. The medic was able to quickly render aid to the fallen racer, who was soon given a clean bill of health, and sent on his way, continuing his Primal Quest race.

These incidences have made it abundantly clear that the SPOT Messenger is the must have device for anyone traveling in the backcountry. Not only does it allow you to send messages to your friends and family, letting them know that you’re okay, but it also allows them to track your progress practically anywhere in the world. But the real value of the device is it’s ability to call for help from those remote places, giving outdoor adventurers a measure of safety never before seen.

For a limited time, SPOT, who is the Presenting Sponsor of Primal Quest 2008, is giving away six  months free tracking service. Simply purchase a SPOT Messenger from this page and enter the promo code “PRIMAL8″ to receive this special deal. But you’ll have to hurry, the offer only runs until July 15th.

And don’t forget, you can still sign up to win a free SPOT signed by the winning team Nike. Go to this page to sign up.

PQ SAR Team On The SPOT!

Thursday, Jun. 26th 2008 10:06 PM

Earlier this evening the Primal Quest Search and Rescue Team received a 911 emergency signal from the SPOT Satellite Messenger being carried by TeamPeakAdventure.com who was out of Checkpoint 19, on their mountain bikes and speeding along in third place.

Photo by Jason PerreiraUpon receiving the alert, the very professional SAR team quickly, and efficiently, went to work, communicating with the SPOT headquarters in Houston and the PQ medical team. Within minutes, personnel were rushing to the scene, with the exact GPS coordinates provided by SPOT. TeamPeakAdventure was soon joined out on the course by a number of emergency volunteers, ready to render aid as needed.

As it turns out, the SPOT device was inadvertently triggered after one of the team members wiped out on his mountain bike, and landed on top of the little orange gadget. When PQ personnel examined the SPOT, they found it caked in dirt and gravel, with the emergency button pressed.

With the cause of the alert identified, and the team not only healthy and in good spirits, the very professional PQ SAR and Medical Teams stood down, relieved that the team was fine and continuing to race well. Most of the SAR and Medical Teams consists of volunteers who come to Primal Quest because they love the sport of adventure racing, and watching them in action, working in concert with one another was an amazing thing to behold. Well done team!
