Famed mountaineer Conrad Anker, who is part of the PQ climbing team, has joined forces with The Conservation Alliance and Timex Expedition to launch the Return To The Outdoors initiative which is designed to inspire people to pursue outdoor adventures and reconnect with nature.
The Return To The Outdoors website encourages us all to share our stories  of what draws us to go outside and explore the world around us. SPOT Satellite Messenger™ Enhances Premiere Adventure Race Experience with GPS Mapping and Real-Time, Leader Board TrackingÂ
MILPITAS, CA (April 23, 2008) – SPOT Inc., the pioneer behind the award-winning SPOT Satellite Messenger, today announced its sponsorship of the Primal Quest Montana Expedition Adventure Race. Called the “The World’s Most Challenging Human Endurance Competition,” Primal Quest 2008 Presented by SPOT is scheduled to take place in Big Sky Country, Montana June 23 through July 2, 2008.
Primal Quest fans can follow their favorite teams at www.ecoprimalquest.com, through real-time GPS tracking and custom leader board technology provided by SPOT allowing for up-to-date viewing on SPOT enhanced Google Maps™. This technology is based on new SPOT services that allow users to broadcast their location and messages to others over the web.  The SPOT satellite messenger will be worn by each of the 70 plus teams of adventure racers during the 10 day, multi-sport competition.
“We have been looking forward to the innovative technology that SPOT is bringing to Primal Quest for many years,” said Don Mann, Primal Quest Director “SPOT is a lightweight personal satellite messenger that won’t slow the racers down and will provide continuous position updates of the teams along the Primal Quest course making it the most interactive Primal Quest in history.”
The Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine has written a nice profile of the Primal Quest Sprint Series. Here’s an excerpt:
It’s been called one of the most difficult athletic events in the world, and now a little piece of it is coming to the South. Primal Quest is an annual high-profile expedition-length adventure race that finds the toughest competitors shelling out thousands of dollars to tackle some of the toughest terrain in the country. Past events have taken racers into the Utah desert and the remote San Juan Mountains of Colorado for over 400 miles of mountain biking, climbing, trekking, and paddling. But running an event of this magnitude—coverage has included spots on ABC and ESPN—is no easy task, and last year race organizers considered ending the event for good. Suddenly to the rescue came Don Mann, a former Navy SEAL and adventure racing pioneer from Virginia Beach, Va., who formerly owned promotion company Odyssey Adventure Racing, which produced the epic BEAST of the East adventure race. Mann sold Odyssey with no intention of returning to the sport, but out of nowhere, opportunity came knocking.
Following four successful expedition length races, the Primal Quest organization has launched the first Primal Quest Sprint Series. In 2008, its premiere year, the PQSS will consist of two races, the first on May 10th at Pocahontas State Park just outside of Richmond, VA. Starting next season, the PQSS, with eight races scheduled, will give amateur and elite athletes alike, the opportunity to win a spot in the 2009 Primal Quest Expedition Adventure Race.
The GoFar Podcast continues it’s focus on Primal Quest this week with an excellent interview with Susanna Greever, the Volunteer Director for PQ. Â Susanna talks at length about the logistics that go into organizing the incredible group of volunteers who play such an integral role in making Primal Quest a successful adventure race. This year we have more than 150 volunteers from 20+ countries donating their time to insure that the teams have an amazing experience in Montana.Â
The words “primal” and “quest” probably don’t come to mind for Montanans looking forward to some leisurely springtime exercise.
But for participants in Primal Quest, an upcoming 400-mile foot, bicycle and boat race in southwestern Montana, the time is nearing to submit proof they’re up to the challenge.
April 15 is the deadline for turning in certificate-of-ability forms in mountain climbing, first aid, navigation, paddling and swimming.
Â
Each participant must have a qualified guide or instructor sign the certificate.
One magazine for all adrenaline and adventure junkies is finally available! And, the publishers and creators of Adventure World Magazine are scouring the globe to give fellow athletes the latest and edgiest event destinations, outdoor venues, and gear on the planet. Â
“This publication was launched out of a passion for the sports that Adventure World Magazine will cover in our upcoming issues,” said Clay Abney, AWM Editor-in-Chief, “We are athletes first and journalists second.”
Numerous magazines on the market today are dedicated to individual adventure sports, but there is not an all-encompassing publication for the adventure sports industry. Abney says after researching this void for over a year he realized many athletes were craving this type of media outlet. “I have been on dozens of messages boards, and interviewed numerous pros and race directors throughout North America,” said Abney, “and the result was a resounding desire for one entity which will cover all things in the realm of adventure and endurance sports.”
There has been a number of Primal Quest related episodes of the GoFAR Podcast of late covering a variety of topics PQ related.
First, we have an interview with Justin Wakefield of GoPro, a new partner for Primal Quest, who will be outfitting racers with their Hero Cameras for the 2008 race to capture an unprecedented amount of video and still images from the field.Â
Teams interested in getting a sneak peek at Primal Quest Montana will want to check out this interview with Chris Caul, the 2008 PQ Course Designer. Chris discusses getting started in adventure racing, moving on to course design, and much more.
"Congratulations on running a fantastic event! I'm in awe of how well it came off. I've run events for 3,000 people for 4 days and I have the barest inkling of what it took. Your staff was incredible!"
