PQ Support Crews
Team registration includes 2 support individuals. An additional 2 support crew members are allowed to register for $200 each to cover food, clothing and insurance costs. This payment must be made at race registration. No more than 4 support crew members are allowed per team. Due to limited space, there is a limit of 1 support vehicle with a maximum length limit of 25’ per team at transition areas.
Additional Notes Regarding Support Crews
1. Support Crew personnel should be equipped with highway maps of Montana and/or the Gazetteer for Montana. Personnel should be familiar with maps and understand basic road navigation. Crews will drive over 500 miles – much of it at night on mountain roads. Some hazards include narrow roads, livestock/animals on the road and remote locations away from stores or fuel stations. The organization will require cell phone(s) being manned 24/7 in support vehicles.
2. Support vehicles (max of 1 per team at transition areas) should be in good repair and full of fuel. Three types of vehicles have been used in the past: (4WD would be good, but not required).
a. Vans or large pickups. Minimal for support but have been used in past races.
b. U-Haul type trucks work very well, but rough on support crews
c. Campers or Motor Homes work very well for racers and support.
3. Use of vehicle GPS systems may be helpful to support drivers, but the routing system may be of limited use. Many of the TA’s do not have a name, and any routing may conflict with driving directions supplied by the organization.
4. The organization will require crews to log in and out of each TA. We need to know where the crew is located at all times and be available to be contacted by cell phone. Verizon seems to be the best carrier in the area, but other cell phone carriers have been used as well.
5. Detailed driving directions will be provided to each support crew during the race. Distances used in these directions were determined by on-board GPS and may vary somewhat from vehicle odometers. When following these directions, drivers will be prompted to reset the odometer at various points.
6. If one racing team member withdraws from the race, they may be included as part of the support crew as long as the remainder of the team continues in the race.
7. Team support outside of a designated Transition Area (TA) is prohibited without prior permission from Race Management.
