Two Teams Disqualified from the Race
Posted on 08/18/09 7:34 PM| by Kraig

Two teams have been disqualified from Primal Quest Badlands presented by SPOT for numerous rules violations. Both Team SMART and Team Native Eyewear were pulled off the course last night following the infractions and a Search and Rescue operation by Primal Quest staff.

Both teams were traveling together at the time of the incident, in which two racers, one from each team, became separated from their teammates, which violated the rule that states that all team members must stay within 100 yards of one another at all times.  They also failed to have all of their mandatory gear with them at all times as well, and when the lost athletes went missing for an extended period of time, a search and rescue operation was launched to find them.

As darkness fell, and the night wore on, the PQ staff and volunteers grew more worried for the missing racers. They were wearing just shorts and light shirts, and the evening was growing colder. Luckily the missing members of SMART and Native Eyewear were found, and in good health.

Unfortunately however, the race staff had no choice but to pull them from the race due to the obvious rules violations which were put in place for the safety of the athletes involved in Primal Quest. Both teams are disappointed of course, but understand the reasons for their disqualification.

Teams continue to arrive at Angostura Reservoir today, the site of the swimming and paddling orienteering courses. Fortunately, it is a warm and sunny day here in the Badlands, making it a bit more comfortable for the racers.

Day 4 Recap
Posted on 08/18/09 11:42 AM| by Osprey

Day four of Primal Quest Badlands Presented by SPOT was a flurry of activity as race organizers worked to get as many teams as possible through the soaring ropes course, designed to be a true highlight of the race.  Jay Smith, the ropes course director, outdid himself this year, as team after team came through the course astonished at its beauty and death-defying heights.  Team TecnuExtreme/Staphaseptic said the race has been great, but that the ropes course is “the icing on the cake.” Antonio from Team Bimbache Extrem said it was the most beautiful ropes course he’s ever done on an adventure race.

It was a cold and wet night out on Angostura Reservoir for a number of teams who were still dealing with the swimming and paddling orienteering course. Earlier this morning, teams iMoat and nuun/FeedTheMachine were both spotted coming off the water.

PQ Partner Spotlight: Uhaul
Posted on 08/18/09 8:41 AM| by Kraig

Without our valued partners, Primal Quest wouldn’t be the event that it is. Each day, over the course of the race, we would like to take the opportunity to thank those partners that have contributed to the success of PQ and have helped us to put on the best adventure race in the world.

The logistics involved in running an event like Primal Quest are massive and challenging to say the least. And when the race is supported, like this year’s PQ, those logistics increase on an exponential scale. That’s why having a partner like Uhaul is so important. In a supported race, the staff and volunteers are in charge of shuttling the team’s equipment around and making sure that everything is in the right place. To do that, you need large vehicles that can carry plenty of gear, and that’s exactly what Uhaul delivered for us. The well known vehicle rental company has graciously provided us a number of trucks that have allowed us to move all the team gear from transition area to transition area without issue, keeping the race running as smoothly as possible, and helping us to deliver the teams’ precious gear, including food, to the places that they need it most.

Thank you Uhaul for being a part of Primal Quest Badlands. We’re proud to have you aboard as one of our partners.
